There are many situations in which restoration professionals may think that use of bleach as a cleaner/sanitizer is effective. Indeed, there are certain restoration projects, such as sewage backflows, floods, and even mold remediation, where individuals have been taught to use bleach as part of their restoration protocol. This history is supported by continuing references in publications put out by numerous organizations including the EPA, American Red Cross, Salvation Army and others. The use of bleach as a “disinfectant” seemed Read more ⇒

As an instructor for mold remediation and indoor air quality investigation classes I am frequently asked about the effectiveness and appropriateness of using ozone generators during mold remediation. Many students are coming from the fire restoration industry where ozone generators are often used to remove smoke orders from contents. For other students the questions about the effectiveness of ozone for mold work are prompted by equipment vendors who indicate that ozone generating machines are perfect for the task. The potential Read more ⇒

Over the last few weeks we have received numerous calls from individuals concerned about the appropriateness of mold remediation projects that do not address critical issues such as possible contamination of the HVAC system or the contents of the building. In fact, we spoke with an attorney for an individual who is reportedly suffering from serious mold-related health concerns, and he was incredulous when he found out that after a major remediation of visible fungal growth from his client’s house Read more ⇒

In the mold remediation industry the focus tends to be, understandably, on areas where mold is growing on building materials or contents. The EPA and the New York City (NYC) Department of Health have published guidelines that offer recommendations for personal protective equipment (PPE) and engineering controls based on the amount of visible mold growth in an area. Obviously, visible mold growth needs to be properly addressed. However, physical growth is not the only form of contamination related to mold. Read more ⇒

Many of us in the cleaning and restoration industry are so busy dealing with the everyday challenges of providing great services to our customers that it is difficult to take time to see where we fit in the long term scheme of the industry. Although an excessive focus backwards can easily result in a non-productive longing for the good old days (which a fair assessment may remind us were not so good after all), a proper understanding of the industry Read more ⇒

Wonder Makers specializes in dealing with situations associated with the indoor environment. Although that is a narrow slice of the entire environmental movement, it is still a broad and exciting area that encompasses challenges such as mold, infectious agents, lead dust hazards, and asbestos building materials. The potential dangers of mold have received substantial publicity over the last decade, with more yet to come as an ever-growing a stack of reports links exposure to fungal agents to significant health problems. Firefighters swarmed the former Scranton Lace Co. building Wednesday afternoon after heavy flames engulfed the first floor, sending thick smoke through the building. A large pile of debris, where the fire may have started, still smoldered an hour and a half after the 4 p.m. call to the Albright Avenue side of the building, Deputy Fire Chief Al Lucas said. Workers using acetylene and oxygen torches were in the building earlier in the day. Inspectors still need to determine the Read more ⇒

DETROIT — A man who authorities said took a shortcut while demolishing a warehouse in Dearborn last year has landed in federal prison.
